Maldives, India leaders inaugurate Hanimaadhoo runway, 700 flats

President Muizzu left for India on Sunday on his first state visit to the country.

President Mohamed Muizzu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the runway of the Hanimaadhoo International Airport (HIA) and handed over 700 housing units constructed in Maldives through the Exim Bank of India's credit facility.

President Muizzu left for India on Sunday on his first state visit to the country.

During the visit, President Muizzu and Prime Minister Modi inaugurated several projects and signed agreements in a joint statement on Monday. 

  • President Muizzu and the Prime Minister of India inaugurated the runway of Hanimaadhoo airport

  • India handed over 700 housing units developed by India's Exim Bank in the second phase of Uppsala

In addition, a currency exchange agreement was signed between the two countries. Four other Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) were also signed. The MoUs are:

  • Agreement between Rashtriya Raksha University of India and National College of Policing and Law Enforcement of Maldives

  • Agreement between the Central Bureau of India and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC); This is a memorandum of understanding signed by the two countries to work together to reduce corruption

  • Renewal of the agreement with the National Judicial Academy of India (NJAI) and the Judicial Service Commission (JSC); Under the MoU, training and capacity building programme will be conducted for the judicial officers of the country

  • Renewal of the agreement between the government of India and the ministry of sports for the promotion of sports
