President Mohamed Muizzu has said it is not necessary to construct roads in all islands using tar or block surfaces.
The President made the remarks during the start of his visit to Baa Atoll, where concerns had been raised about road construction in Kudarikilu, an island with a population of about 600 people and an area of approximately 30 hectares.
Speaking in Kamadhoo, the first stop of his tour on Monday, President Muizzu said he did not support building roads with hard-surface materials in every island.
“It is not necessary to pave the roads with a hard surface. It is not necessary to build roads with blocks. This is especially the case in islands where local tourism is developing,” he said.
He noted that in Kamadhoo, the council had proposed constructing roads without tarring, maintaining sandy surfaces while incorporating drainage systems. He said such an approach would be supported in areas where local tourism is expanding.
“If the people want the roads to be maintained with a proper drainage system, then the concept will continue,” he said.
The President added that road development in each island would be based on the specific requirements of its residents.
