A 40-year-old man, Abdullah Miyad of G. Sansangeaage, Male', has been arrested and remanded in custody for 15 days in connection with death threats made against President Mohamed Muizzu and other state officials via social media.
Miyad was arrested shortly after returning to the Maldives on Tuesday evening. He was subsequently presented before the Criminal Court, which ordered his detention pending further investigation.
The incident stems from a threatening comment posted under the name 'Ablor Myad Yosef' on a live broadcast of President Muizzu’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly on the night of September 25.
The comment, which included a threat to "kill" the president, appeared during the live stream on the president's social media page.
According to police, the reasons for Miyad's arrest include not only the threats directed at President Muizzu but also various other death threats and derogatory language aimed at state officials and members of the public.
Additionally, Miyad is accused of posting content that incites harm and encourages same-sex relationships.
