Attorney General Ahmed Usham announced Monday that the government will submit amendments to the parliament this week to enact legal changes necessary to ban the import, use, and distribution of vaping products in the country.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Usham praised the government's decisive action to prohibit all forms of vaping and confirmed that work is underway to introduce legislative amendments. The amendments will target two key pieces of legislation:

  • 1-

    Tobacco Control Act

  • 2-

    Export-Import Act of Maldives

While Usham did not provide specific details on the exact amendments to these laws, he emphasised the importance of the ban.

"We welcome the president’s decision for the sake of our young children, youth, and all the people of the country,” Usham wrote on X.

President Mohamed Muizzu officially announced Monday two critical deadlines regarding the ban:

  • November 15: The import of vaping products and their components will be banned.

  • December 15: A complete ban on the use, carrying, production, sales, advertising, and free distribution of vaping products will come into effect.

The ban reflects growing concerns about the health risks associated with vaping, especially among young people.

The decision to ban vaping has already sparked public discussion, with many applauding the government's proactive stance against the rising use of these products.
