Inguraidhoo MP and Majority Leader of the Parliament, Ibrahim Falah, on Thursday announced his decision to forgo 10% of his parliamentary salary for one year.

The move is intended to support President Mohamed Muizzu's recently announced measures aimed at reducing state expenditure and improving the economic situation.

"I have decided to deduct 10% from my parliamentary salary, for one year from November 1, in support of President Muizzu’s important measures to improve the country’s economic situation, increase revenue, and cut expenditure," Falah stated in a post on X.

President Muizzu, as part of his economic reform agenda, outlined several measures to cut government spending. These include a 10% reduction in the salaries of political office holders and employees of government-owned companies, excluding banks.

Additionally, a cap of MVR 90,000 has been set on payments to company owners. The president has also requested a 10% deduction in the salaries of judicial officials and members of parliament. To lead by example, he announced that he would forego 50% of his own salary.

Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla has also announced his decision to forgo 50% of his salary in support of the President's measures. However, he did not specify the duration for which the decision would apply.
