Former President Abdulla Yameen on Thursday announced his intention to contest the 2028 presidential election.

Yameen, who was disqualified from participating in the last election due to an 11-year prison sentence handed down by the Criminal Court, made the statement during an interview on Raajje TV.

In the interview, presenter Amir Saleem questioned Yameen about his political future, asking whether he would pursue the presidency.

Yameen responded initially with a question, “Won’t I go to jail for the next presidential election?” He added that ongoing court cases, which remain stalled, must be resolved before he can move forward.

Pressed on whether he would contest if acquitted, Yameen expressed confidence in his legal defence, asserting that he would be cleared if given a fair trial. When asked a third time about his intentions should no verdict be reached, Yameen confirmed his decision to run without hesitation.

Yameen outlined three primary goals should he assume office: first, to stabilise the economy; second, to address military relations with India, including a dialogue for the withdrawal of Indian forces and efforts to secure sea territory; and third, to develop the economy to increase employment opportunities for the youth.
