Committee to review Israeli passport ban bill by Feb 2025
Nazim also suggested that some political forces were attempting to influence the process to discredit the government.
Parliament's security services committee (241 committee) on Tuesday passed a motion to complete its review of a bill amending the Immigration Act to ban Israeli citizens from entering the Maldives by February 2025.
The committee convened for the first time in five months after MDP MP Meekail Naseem introduced the bill in early June, which calls for action in response to Israel's actions against Palestinians. The meeting, which aimed to set a deadline for the bill’s review, was chaired by Ahmed Saleem, PNC member from Eydhafushi constituency.
The committee acknowledged the sensitivity of the proposed amendment and discussed the need for consultations with various institutions before proceeding.
Thulhaadhoo MP Abdul Hannan Abu Bark raised concerns about the timeline, noting that the process would take significant time, especially with a two-month recess scheduled from December 1. He proposed that the bill be completed by February next year, a motion which was supported by MNP leader Mohamed Nazim.
Nazim also emphasised the sensitivity of the issue and the importance of consulting a broad range of stakeholders before making a decision. He condemned Israel's actions against Palestinians and expressed his support for President Mohamed Muizzu's efforts on the matter.
Nazim also suggested that some political forces were attempting to influence the process to discredit the government.
The motion was supported by Kaashidhoo MP Munsim Ibrahim. However, the chair did not disclose how many members voted in favour of the motion.
PNC Parliamentary Group Deputy Leader Mohamed Shahid, speaking after the vote, stated that the bill involved significant implications for the country’s economy and independence. He expressed concerns about passing such a bill without proper study, underscoring the need for careful consideration of all factors. Shahid reiterated support for Palestine but also called for consultations with all parties to ensure the best interests of the country.
The bill was introduced in parliament following a decision by the government to amend the law to prohibit Israeli citizens from entering the Maldives, which was made during a cabinet meeting in June. This decision followed public calls for action on the issue.
