A march calling for workers' rights was held in Malé today as part of International Workers’ Day activities.
Various workers’ rights organisations participated in the annual May Day event.
The march, which included groups such as taxi drivers and fishermen's unions, focused on demands for better wages and recognition of workers' rights.
Initially authorised by the police as a peaceful assembly, the march was later halted before it could proceed along Majeedhee Magu. Police stated that a prior letter had notified organisers of a change in the permitted route.
The situation escalated when verbal exchanges took place between some march participants and police officers. The actions of law enforcement and the government in restricting the march drew criticism from several quarters. The march itself was also subject to public criticism.
