President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said on Thursday that the government will continue efforts to improve worker wages, register service workers across various sectors, and expand access to housing schemes and bank loans.
He made the remarks in a message on the occasion of International Workers’ Day, observed annually on 1 May.
The President said national development depends on the contributions of workers and that the government will continue to pave the way for income growth and respond to the concerns of workers. He added that all segments of society should collaborate to ensure that no citizen remains unemployed.
The President called on parents to encourage children to be work-oriented and active, highlighting the importance of instilling work ethics and skills from an early age. He also said that these elements should be integrated into the national education curriculum to increase the number of productive workers in the country.
He noted that while Labour Day is marked on 1 May, every day is a day that workers contribute to the progress of the Maldives. He also said that government initiatives must continue without interruption to ensure the proper regulation of foreign workers and enforcement of related laws.
“The workers have brought the Maldives to its present stage. They will also take it to where it aspires to be in the future,” he said. “The energy and effort of the Maldivian people are reflected in the services they provide.”
