Govt launches project to build 1,000 housing units in Eydhafushi

President Mohamed Muizzu attended the signing ceremony for an agreement to award the construction of 1,000 housing units in B. Eydhafushi to China's Sinohydro.
The ceremony was held at the President's Office Saturday.
Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, signed the agreement on behalf of the Maldivian government.
This follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by both parties on 8 May, under which various activities have since been initiated.
Speaking at the ceremony, the minister outlined that the project would comprise three 15-storey towers, featuring 336 three-bedroom and 772 two-bedroom flats. He emphasised that Eydhafushi would emerge as a key developmental hub among the urban centres being developed across the Maldives. The housing units, he noted, would provide accommodation for those working in Eydhafushi and the surrounding resort areas.
The introduction of special social housing for Maldivian tourism sector employees and the provision of homeownership through government housing schemes represent key objectives of the Dhiveheenge Raajje manifesto.
During his visit to Eydhafushi in March, President Muizzu identified the island as a priority location within the Government's nationwide project to develop 40,000 housing units.
At the recent inauguration of the Hiyaavehi Financing Programme in November, President Muizzu described the government's 2025 budget, submitted to the parliament, as one centred on expanding homeownership and housing opportunities.
