President Mohamed Muizzu on Wednesday ratified a constitutional amendment outlining circumstances under which a Member of Parliament (MP) can lose their seat.

The amendment specifies conditions related to party membership and introduces additional provisions on economic and defence matters.

The government proposed the amendment, which was moved by Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid, Deputy Leader of the Progressive National Congress (PNC) Parliamentary Group. It was introduced, reviewed in committee, and passed in parliament on Wednesday.

Key conditions under which an MP would lose their seat include:

  • Withdrawing from the political party under which they were elected.

  • Joining another political party during their term.

  • Being expelled from their party as per legal provisions.

  • An independent MP joining a political party during their term.

The amendment also includes provisions related to national economic and defence matters, including:

  • Strengthening the framework for changes to the Maldives’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

  • Prohibiting the stationing of foreign troops in the Maldives without the approval of a majority of Parliament members.

The amendment was reviewed by a committee of the whole parliament before being passed during Wednesday's afternoon sitting.

The amendment has sparked debate over its implications for party autonomy and governance, with opposition members raising concerns about its potential impact on political representation and freedom of association.
