Maldives not at risk from tsunami after major Russia earthquake, MET says

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has stated that the Maldives will not be affected by the tsunami triggered by a powerful earthquake near Russia earlier on Wednesday.
According to the MET Office, the earthquake, which measured 8.7 on the Richter scale, occurred 136 kilometres east of the Russian port city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia.
Following the earthquake, tsunami waves have been reported in several countries, including Russia and Japan, and emergency declarations have been made in some of the affected areas. A tsunami warning has also been issued for parts of the Pacific, including Australia, Japan, and Hawaii.
The Maldives Meteorological Service confirmed that the Indian Ocean remains unaffected by the seismic event and stated that there is no tsunami threat to the Maldives.
A MET official said the situation is being monitored closely and that updates will be provided as new information becomes available. The official also advised the public not to spread unverified information on social media that could cause unnecessary concern.
