A fire broke out early Thursday morning at the Housing Ministry building on Ameenee Magu, disrupting scheduled events and causing significant property damage.

The fire, which started around 7:30am, was extinguished, but the affected area remains under close monitoring as small internal fires continue to smoulder.

The incident has led to the postponement of national events, including the Fishermen's Day ceremony and the Rehendhi Award ceremony.

The fisheries ministry announced that the Fishermen's Day rally, originally planned for Friday night, has been delayed. A new date for the event will be announced later, and all invitees will be informed accordingly. The rally is an annual celebration recognising the contributions of fishermen to the country's economy and heritage.

The social ministry also confirmed the postponement of the Rehendhi Award ceremony, which was scheduled for Tuesday. The awards honour individuals who have made significant contributions to advancing women's rights and promoting gender equality in society. The ministry stated that a revised date for the event would be announced soon.

While the fire has been contained, authorities are continuing to monitor the area closely. Firefighters are using water to manage the remaining heat spots and ensure the fire does not reignite.
