A devastating fire broke out at the Ministry of Housing building on Thursday, leaving 29 people displaced and in need of emergency assistance.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed that the fire, which consumed the entire structure, also affected three nearby buildings: M. Loakashige, M. Kudhimaavilla, and M. Loobiyaage.
The Ministry of Housing building, part of which was constructed using steel roof materials, was completely burned down despite fire responders extinguishing the flames an hour after the incident began. NDMA officials reported that residents of seven homes in the affected building have been relocated to temporary shelters.
Among the 29 displaced individuals are 15 women and 14 men, including one person with special needs. Authorities are working to ensure all evacuees are safe and have access to necessary support during this difficult time.
The NDMA has urged the public to cooperate with ongoing efforts to provide relief and assess the extent of the damage.
