Housing ministry servers, documents feared lost after fire

Male's residential services and buildings section, also housed in the affected building, has raised further concerns

Housing minister Dr Ali Haider said on Friday that the servers of the housing ministry building are unlikely to survive the fire that broke out Thursday morning.

The fire, which began around 7:30 am, destroyed the housing ministry and construction ministry offices, along with affecting three nearby buildings.

In an interview with state media PSM, Haider confirmed that most of the documents and data stored at the housing ministry were lost in the incident.

“Especially our servers are now estimated not to be saved,” Haider said. “If that happens, it’s a significant loss. All the information we have, including records about employees and ongoing projects, would be gone.”

The housing ministry clarified that the list of flat recipients under the Gedhoruveirya scheme from the previous MDP government was stored in cloud hosting and remains unaffected.

Male's residential services and buildings section, also housed in the affected building, has raised further concerns about potential losses. Male Deputy Mayor Ahmed Nareesh expressed worry over the fate of critical city records stored there.

Nareesh explained that the building contained documents dating back to 1960 and earlier, including household registries and citizenship registries.

“If any of these documents are damaged, it would be a major loss for the people. These records are essential for proving ownership or inheritance and cannot be restored or found elsewhere,” Nareesh said.

The full extent of the damage and potential recovery of data or documents remains uncertain as assessments continue.
