A fire that broke out at a garage in capital Male Thursday morning has so far killed 10 people, with authorities still searching for survivors through the debris of the burnt down building.
The fire broke out at a ground floor garage at M. Nirufehi around 12:30am.
MNDF firefighters controlled the fire in about an hour and began evacuating the area, but it took more than six hours firefighters extingusih the fire completely.
Police and MNDF later said 10 people had died in the fire, with all but one having died in the building. One of the victims died while being treated for burns at IGMH.
Fourteen people have been rescued so far, police and MNDF said.
According to sources, the building served as an accommodation quarter for expatriate workers.
Meanwhile, National Disaster Management Centre (NDMA) has setup a temporary shelter at Maafannu stadium for the people evacuated from the area.
