Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation into allegations circulating on social media regarding Superintendent of Police Rajunee Shuaib and his receipt of a Vinares flat through irregular means.
The allegations surfaced following reports that individuals ineligible for land under the previous government's Binveriya scheme had obtained plots by submitting fraudulent documents.
Police initiated an investigation into the matter on Wednesday and held a press conference the next day to provide updates. Shuaib was present at the briefing, which drew criticism from the opposition. The opposition described the press conference as politically motivated and questioned the timing, given that the investigation had only just begun.
In the wake of the briefing, additional claims emerged on social media, suggesting irregularities in the allocation of flats under the Vinares housing scheme. Among these allegations was the claim that Shuaib had been improperly awarded a flat.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Shifan addressed the issue in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, stating, “The Maldives Police Service is investigating the information circulating on social media regarding Superintendent of Police Rajunee Shuaib.”
Shuaib previously served as the head of the Economic Crime Department within the police force.
The police have not disclosed further details about the investigation or its scope.
