Male City Council on Wednesday appointed its first internal auditor.

The decision to establish the position was made last October, with bids for the appointment opened soon after. The council has emphasised that this move is aimed at ensuring the proper use of public funds and resources.

In a statement on social media, Mayor Adam Azim noted that the council operates with taxpayers’ money, highlighting the importance of accountability and transparency.

“This is the first appointment in the history of the council. It is my biggest goal to make the council a place of trust for the people,” Azim stated.

He also emphasised the council's commitment to maintaining integrity and transparency, adding, “With the foundation laid today, the future of our city will be shaped as a transparent institution.”

The move follows recent remarks by former President Abdulla Yameen, who raised concerns about the lack of audits for the city council. Yameen stressed the importance of public awareness regarding how state-allocated funds are utilised by the council.

While council audits are currently conducted by the Audit Office, the local government ministry has previously noted challenges in preparing audit reports for every council due to resource constraints. The appointment of an internal auditor is expected to address these issues and enhance oversight within Male City Council.
