Male council begins road repairs to address flooding
Last weekend's heavy rainfall caused significant flooding in various areas of Male.
Male City Council has initiated repairs on roads that are frequently flooded during heavy rainfall.
In a series of messages on social media on Tuesday, the council announced that it conducted a survey to assess the condition of roads across the city. Based on the findings, repairs are being carried out on roads most affected by flooding, including:
-
Majeedhee Magu
-
Chaandhanee Magu
-
Rahdhebai Magu
The council stated that the repairs aim to mitigate the challenges caused by flooding during heavy rains.
Last weekend's heavy rainfall caused significant flooding in various areas of Male, making it difficult for pedestrians to navigate the roads. The area surrounding Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and the STO flour warehouse was particularly affected.
President Mohamed Muizzu has highlighted that a permanent solution to the flooding issue will be achieved through the modernisation of the city’s roads.
In the interim, a temporary drainage system has been installed in the western part of Male to alleviate the problem. While the system is not expected to completely resolve flooding, it will facilitate faster drainage of water, according to government officials.
