Police announced on Tuesday that nine individuals have been fined under the recently implemented ban on the sale and use of vaping devices and related products.

The ban, which took effect on December 15, was introduced as part of amendments to the Tobacco Control Act.

According to a police message, fines totalling MVR 50,000 have been issued since the enforcement of the ban. Among those penalised, one individual was fined MVR 10,000 for using an e-cigarette while driving.

The amended Tobacco Control Act imposes significant penalties for violations related to vaping devices, including their use, sale, import, or free distribution. Key provisions include:

  • Importation: Fines of up to MVR 50,000 for importing vaping devices or related products, with additional fines of MVR 10,000 per device.

  • Sale: Fines of MVR 20,000 for selling vaping devices or products, with an additional MVR 10,000 fine for each item sold.

  • Free distribution: Fines of MVR 10,000 for distributing vaping devices or products free of charge.

  • Distribution to minors: An additional fine of MVR 50,000 if vaping devices or products are distributed free of charge to minors.

  • Usage: Individuals found using vaping products face fines of up to MVR 5,000.

The government has also raised duties on tobacco products significantly, leading to increased costs. For instance, a pack of cigarettes previously sold for MVR 100 now costs significantly more.

Authorities have urged the public to comply with the new regulations and warned of strict enforcement measures to ensure adherence to the law.
