Heavy rains cause severe flooding in N. Henbadhoo
Maldives has experienced continuous rainfall since Monday, with heavy rains persisting in several parts of the country.
Heavy rains in N. Henbadhoo have caused significant flooding, resulting in damage to homes and infrastructure on the island.
Maldives has experienced continuous rainfall since Monday, with heavy rains persisting in several parts of the country.
Henbadhoo Council Director Ahmed Rasheed stated that the rain began at 6:30 am on Tuesday and subsided after two hours, leaving large parts of the island submerged.
Rasheed noted that many houses were flooded, causing damage to furniture and equipment.
"Some houses have been flooded up to three feet. The beds and bedroom sets in several homes were damaged beyond repair," he said.
The flooding occurred despite a drainage system installed in 2019 to address flooding issues during the rainy season. Rasheed explained that Tuesday's rainfall exceeded the capacity of the system, causing water to rise rapidly, even from underground.
According to Rasheed:
-
Toilets and floors in houses were flooded.
-
The sewerage system was damaged, leading to sewage leaks.
-
Power outages occurred in some homes, making it difficult for residents to remain indoors.
-
The school and garbage disposal machines were also damaged.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has been deployed to assist with relief efforts in the area.
