Govt taxi line service to expand to Addu this year
The Minister noted that demand for land transport has increased following the connection between Malé, Hulhumalé and the airport through the bridge.
Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has announced that the government plans to introduce its taxi line service in Addu City before the end of the year.
The announcement was made on Thursday at a ceremony held in Hulhumalé Central Park to launch the taxi service in the Greater Malé Area using 150 electric vehicles brought by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company.
The Minister said there is demand for the service in Addu City, which has the largest population outside the capital.
He stated that the service will be introduced in Addu under the direction of President Mohamed Muizzu.
The Minister noted that demand for land transport has increased following the connection between Malé, Hulhumalé and the airport through the bridge.
He said the introduction of the taxi line service is intended to address issues related to access to taxi services.
The Minister also stated that the number of vehicles in the taxi fleet will be increased before the completion of the bridge connecting Malé with Villimale and Gulhifalhu.
He said systems have been established for drivers and that the service will operate in line with fares set by the Ministry of Transport.
The vehicles for the service arrived last month. Of the 150 vehicles brought by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company, 70 are compact models designed for use in narrow streets.
The fleet includes 60 Deepal S05 vehicles, 70 Lumin vehicles and 20 Deepal S07 vehicles.
