The government-operated taxi service began collecting fares on Saturday after a two-week period of free service.
The taxi line, operated by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), was launched on April 2 with a fleet of 150 electric vehicles. The service had been provided without charge since its launch.
MTCC confirmed that passengers will now be charged in line with existing taxi rates in Malé.
Payments can be made through the service’s mobile application or by scanning QR codes provided for the service.
As the service moved to a paid model, allegations emerged regarding the development of the mobile application. It has been claimed that a contract valued at about MVR 13 million was awarded to a party linked to individuals within MTCC.
