Heavy rainfall caused flooding across GDh. Thinadhoo on Saturday night.

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) reported that the country has experienced persistent bad weather for more than a week, with significant rainfall recorded during the past 24 hours. GDh. Kaadedhdhoo registered 72.9 mm of rain.

Thinadhoo Mayor Saudh Ali told Atoll Times on Sunday that many homes were flooded and some households experienced power outages following the downpour that began around 1:30am. Flooding also entered the hospital and the water plant.

According to Saudh:

  • MNDF assisted in pumping out water from last night, and water levels have since decreased.

  • Several homes were inundated and livestock losses were reported.

  • MET has forecast more heavy rain in the coming days.

He said that the rainfall recorded last night was the highest Thinadhoo had experienced.

Residents said the rain intensified suddenly, leading to rapid flooding. Saudh noted that while heavy rainfall was recorded two months earlier, the extent of flooding had not reached this level.

“The pump stations are functioning, and there is no major inconvenience to the public. However, the continuous rain for a long period made it difficult for pump stations to keep up,” he said.

Images released by the council showed houses flooded up to roof level. Furniture and household items in several homes were damaged.

This is the first time floodwater has entered facilities such as the hospital and the water plant, though earlier rain in October caused flooding in some parts of the island.

Weather outlook for Sunday

According to MET:

  • Showery weather with possible thundershowers is expected in parts of the north and south until 5pm.

  • Some islands in central Maldives may also receive showers.

  • Winds: 8–18 mph in the central and northern atolls; west/northwest winds at 5–15 mph in the southern atolls.

  • Seas: moderate in the north and centre, calm in the south.
