Dharavandhoo and Hulhumalé record highest rainfall in 24 hours

B. Dharavandhoo and Hulhumalé recorded the highest rainfall in the Maldives during the 24-hour period ending at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, according to the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET).
MET said both locations received 84 millimetres of rainfall between 8:00 a.m. on Thursday and 8:00 a.m. on Friday.
The country continues to experience rain and strong winds associated with the south-west monsoon. MET reported that several islands were affected by heavy rainfall and squally conditions on Thursday and Friday.
According to the weather agency, the highest average wind speed recorded during the 24-hour period ending at midnight on Friday was 17 mph at HDh. Kulhudhuffushi, N. Maafaru and Hulhulé.
The highest wind gust during squalls was recorded at L. Kadhdhoo, where winds reached 46 mph.
The weather also affected flight operations at Velana International Airport on Friday morning. Several inbound aircraft were required to remain in holding patterns, while others were diverted to Colombo, Sri Lanka, due to adverse weather conditions.
MET said unsettled weather is expected to continue across parts of the Maldives on Friday and Saturday.
A Yellow Weather Alert remains in effect from Haa Alif Atoll to Faafu Atoll. Under the alert, average wind speeds are forecast to range between 25 and 30 mph, with gusts of up to 50 mph during squalls.
MET has advised the public, particularly seafarers, to exercise caution and monitor the latest weather updates.
