State tourism minister Nihad suspended over MDP allegations
MDP emphasised that unfounded statements could deter tourists and harm the industry's recovery.
State tourism minister Mohamed Nihad was suspended on Tuesday following allegations he made accusing the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) of planning a terrorist attack targeting international tourism brands in the Maldives.
Nihad, who switched to the ruling Progressive National Congress (PNC) from MDP after the 2023 presidential election, claimed at a PNC rally Monday evening that the MDP leadership was planning attacks on resorts operated by international brands.
A government official has confirmed his suspension, pending further action.
The MDP issued a statement condemning Nihad’s remarks, asserting that such claims are inappropriate, particularly coming from a senior government official overseeing tourism.
The statement highlighted the potential economic consequences of such allegations, noting that similar rhetoric from officials has already caused significant financial losses in the tourism sector this year. The MDP called for immediate steps to protect the safety and reputation of the tourism industry, urging authorities to ensure the security of tourists, workers, and businesses.
The Maldives' tourism sector, a critical part of the national economy, has faced challenges in maintaining its image as a safe destination. The MDP emphasised that unfounded statements could deter tourists and harm the industry's recovery.
