Part of Majeedhee Magu closed for flood mitigation work
The section between Dhanburuh Magu and Nikagas Magu will remain closed until next Saturday.
A section of Majeedhee Magu in the capital city, Male, has been closed to public traffic starting Saturday to address persistent flooding issues during the rainy season.
The Male City Council announced on Thursday that the work will be carried out in blocks as part of efforts to resolve the flooding problem. Traffic on Majeedhee Magu has been rerouted, and the section between Dhanburuh Magu and Nikagas Magu will remain closed until next Saturday.
The council stated that it has undertaken road repairs in areas frequently affected by flooding during heavy rains. A survey was conducted to assess the condition of roads across the city, identifying the most flood-prone areas for priority repairs.
Repairs have been carried out on the following roads:
-
Majeedhee Magu
-
Chaandhanee Magu
-
Rahdhebai Magu
Heavy rainfall last weekend caused significant flooding, particularly in areas near the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and the State Trading Organization (STO) flour warehouse. These areas are known to experience severe flooding during rains.
President Mohamed Muizzu has stated that a permanent solution to the flooding issue will be achieved when the city's roads are modernised.
As a temporary measure, a drainage system has been installed in the western part of the city. While this system does not completely resolve the flooding problem, it is expected to improve the efficiency of water drainage during heavy rains, according to government officials.
