Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Sunday accused the ruling Progressive National Congress (PNC) of unlawfully including its registered members in the PNC’s membership register.

According to the electoral rolls, the MDP remains the largest political party in the Maldives, with over 50,000 registered members. In a statement issued today, the MDP condemned alleged attempts by the PNC to inflate its membership numbers.

The MDP stated that it had received complaints from members of its party, including members of the National Assembly, who claim they were moved from the MDP register to the PNC register without their consent.

The MDP alleged that forged signatures had been submitted to the Elections Commission (EC) by the PNC as part of efforts to reach a membership target of 100,000, a goal previously announced by President Mohamed Muizzu. The statement further claimed that state agencies were being influenced to conceal this matter.

The MDP has called for a formal investigation by the EC and has urged the government to strengthen rules governing the admission and removal of individuals from political parties. The statement included the following demands:

  • Measures to prevent individuals from being added to the PNC register through falsified forms.

  • Legal action against the alleged misuse of personal information stored in government institutions to increase PNC membership.

  • An investigation into reported cases of signature forgery.

The MDP emphasised the seriousness of these allegations and reiterated its call for legal and institutional action to address the matter.
