Maldives on Tuesday reaffirmed its recognition of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) as a terrorist organisation in its updated list of terrorist groups.
The militant group, which took over Syria's governance following the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad, has been included on the list since 2019.
HTS was first designated as a terrorist group by the United Nations Security Council in May 2014. Nations including the United States and the United Kingdom continue to classify the group as a terrorist organisation.
The Maldives’ list also identifies Syria as a war zone, with all its territories designated under this classification since October 31, 2019.
The Prohibition of Terrorism Act prohibits various activities related to terrorist groups, including providing support, sharing materials, joining such groups, or traveling to war zones to participate in conflicts.
Under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, the president, in consultation with the National Security Council, determines which groups are considered terrorist organisations. The president also holds the authority to make additions to the list as required.
