President Mohamed Muizzu announced on Sunday that contractors will be hired this month for the housing projects he promised during his presidential campaign.

Speaking to the people of Gulhi as part of his ongoing visits across the country, the President emphasized that this year would mark a decisive step forward in addressing the housing crisis in the Maldives, particularly in rural areas.

During his address, President Muizzu outlined the government's commitment to fulfilling the housing promises laid out in the campaign manifesto, especially for the provinces, islands, and cities outside of the capital, Male'.

He stated that the announcement to hire contractors would take place in January 2025, with a clear focus on implementing all the identified projects within the budgetary framework. These initiatives aim to provide sustainable housing solutions across the country, with special attention given to islands and provinces that have long faced challenges in this area.

"This year will be the most practical year in solving housing problems," President Muizzu declared, reinforcing that the government's housing projects will proceed at full speed throughout the year.

He stressed that while Male’ will continue to see ongoing housing developments, the primary focus will be on rural and outlying areas where the need for affordable housing is most urgent.

The President further noted that dredged islands would also receive housing projects in the upcoming years, ensuring that development reaches all corners of the nation.

In his address, President Muizzu also highlighted several key projects underway or planned for Gulhi and other islands. He assured the people that the land reclamation project in Gulhi, which is already in progress, would continue without interruption.

The President confirmed that the project would be carried out according to the wishes and requirements of the local population.

In addition to housing, the President emphasized that Gulhi would benefit from a host of other infrastructure improvements.

These include the resolution of the island’s harbour issue, the completion of ongoing land dredging works, and the addressing of various other concerns that have been raised by the local community.

"We are determined to resolve the housing challenges that have persisted for so long in many parts of the country," President Muizzu said.

"This year will lay the foundation for a significant transformation, ensuring that every citizen has access to decent and affordable housing."
