Procurement on bulk boulders for all islands underway, president says
President assured the community that projects would be prioritised as part of the government’s development agenda.
President Mohamed Muizzu said on Wednesday that efforts are underway to procure and transport boulders needed for infrastructure projects across the Maldives.
He made this announcement during a meeting with the residents of GDh. Rathafandhoo.
Highlighting the challenges faced by ongoing projects, the president noted that the shortage of materials, particularly boulders, has delayed several initiatives, including projects aimed at preventing soil erosion.
"The project initiated by MTCC to protect the eroded beach area has been stalled due to material and funding constraints. Similar delays are being experienced in other islands. The primary issue is the lack of boulders," the president said.
He added that discussions had been held last week with companies, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Construction to address the issue.
“Efforts are being made to ensure all islands receive the necessary boulders in bulk. These are required not only for shoreline protection but also for harbour construction, dredging, and other projects. Plans and funding have already been arranged,” he said.
During his address, President Muizzu also committed to fulfilling key requests from the residents of Rathafandhoo. These include:
-
Construction of a harbour: A project aimed at improving connectivity and supporting local economic activities.
-
Development of a multipurpose hall at the school: To enhance educational and community facilities.
-
Implementation of waste management solutions: To address environmental and sanitation challenges.
The president assured the community that these projects would be prioritised as part of the government’s development agenda.
