President Mohamed Muizzu on Wednesday announced plans to address electricity shortages in islands across the Maldives by the start of Ramadan.

Speaking during a visit to GDh. Fiyoree, the president acknowledged that power plants in the islands have faced maintenance challenges in recent years.

He stated that efforts are underway in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, Fenaka Corporation, STO, and MTCC to address these issues.

“Our aim is to deliver and install generators in all islands by the start of Ramadan. The work has already begun, and while this is a significant challenge, we are determined to meet this goal,” the president said.

He assured residents that the electricity issues would be resolved in a way that meets the expectations of the people.

President Muizzu also announced plans to establish a waste management system in every island within this year.

“This is a longstanding issue, but we have set an ambitious target to resolve it. While it is challenging, we believe it is achievable,” he said.

The waste management system will be designed based on the population size of each island, as well as the nature of local activities, industries, and visitor traffic.

These initiatives are part of the government’s broader efforts to address infrastructure challenges and improve living conditions across the Maldives.
