Elections Commission (EC) is working to replace physical membership forms for political parties with a digital system integrated with eFaas, the Maldives' national digital identity platform.

The initiative aims to address the recurring issue of fake membership forms, which has been highlighted in recent complaints.

EC member Hassan Zakariyya on Thursday confirmed the development, stating that the transition to an online biometric system is expected within the next two months.

"There has been a persistent issue of fake forms being submitted since the formation of political parties," Zakariyya said. "Despite adding features to physical forms to prevent forgery, the problem persists. Moving to an online system through eFaas is the solution we are working on."

The EC has received approximately 300 complaints related to fake membership forms since the last two quarters of last year. The issue involves individuals being added to political party membership rolls without their consent.

Zakariyya emphasised that the digital system would reduce the potential for forgery by linking membership processes to verified biometric data.
