President Mohamed Muizzu has announced a reduction in electricity tariffs for domestic consumers, effective from the first day of next month.
The President made the announcement on social media platform X on Friday, stating that he has instructed authorities to lower the domestic category electricity rates and to ensure the changes are implemented sustainably.
The revised tariff rates are as follows:

Band 0–100 units: MVR 1.25 (previously MVR 1.50)

Band 101–200 units: MVR 1.50 (previously MVR 1.70)

Band 201–300 units: MVR 1.50 (previously MVR 2.15)

Band 301–400 units: MVR 1.50 (previously MVR 2.50)

Band 401–500 units: MVR 2.66 (previously MVR 2.95)

Band 501–600 units: MVR 3.20 (previously MVR 3.55)

Band above 600 units: MVR 3.83 (previously MVR 4.25)
The government had previously offered a 10 percent discount on electricity bills during this year’s Ramadan and the following month. High electricity charges during warmer periods have led to repeated public concerns.
