Democrats' Amr, Shifaz, Azim rejoin MDP
The split occurred during the government of former President Solih, leading to the creation of two factions within the MDP.
Several key members who left the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in 2023 to form The Democrats rejoined the MDP on Friday.
The split occurred during the government of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, leading to the creation of two factions within the MDP. While Solih’s loyalists remained in the party, those aligned with former President Mohamed Nasheed departed to establish The Democrats.
Senior officials from the MDP confirmed that some prominent individuals rejoined the party Friday evening. They include:
-
Former STO Managing Director Hussain Amr, who served as the running mate for The Democrats in the last presidential election.
-
Mohamed Shifaz, a minister in the President’s Office under Solih's government.
-
Former Member of Parliament Ali Azim.
The MDP has announced plans to hold a street rally on January 31 under the slogan “In Defence of the Constitution.”
