Elections Commission (EC) has rejected a forged membership form submitted for the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) on behalf of Vaikaradhoo Member of Parliament Hussain Ziyad, who is a member of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Ziyad’s name appeared on the PNC membership register on the 23rd of last month.

The EC confirmed in a statement on Monday that the form to register Ziyad as a PNC member had been submitted without his knowledge.

“There has been no change in the membership status of Vaikaradhoo MP Hussain Ziyad,” the statement said.

The commission stated that Ziyad's membership status with the MDP remains intact, as the forged form has been invalidated. Further action will be taken against those responsible for submitting the fraudulent document.

The EC also announced plans to strengthen administrative procedures and implement additional legal and administrative measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The MDP raised its concerns over the issue during a meeting with the EC earlier today. Party leaders emphasised the importance of addressing the matter promptly to maintain transparency and accountability.

The EC noted that it had not been alerted to any changes in Ziyad’s party affiliation. EC member Hassan Zakaria explained to Daur that the alert system did not recognize Ziyad as having switched parties following the parliamentary elections.
