MDP to file no-confidence motion against home minister

Complaints have emerged regarding individuals being added to the PNC’s membership register without their knowledge through invalid forms.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Wednesday decided to file a no-confidence motion against Home Minister Ali Ihsan.

An MDP parliament member confirmed that the party’s parliamentary group reached the decision during a meeting held earlier Wednesday. The motion is expected to be submitted to parliament soon.

The decision follows allegations involving the misuse of public information under the Department of National Registration (DNR), which operates under the home ministry. Ihsan is accused of facilitating the submission of invalid forms to the Elections Commission (EC) for the admission of members to the ruling Progressive National Congress (PNC).

Complaints have emerged regarding individuals being added to the PNC’s membership register without their knowledge through invalid forms. One notable case involves MDP Parliament Member for Vikaradhoo, Hussain Ziyad, who was registered with the PNC without his consent. The EC subsequently rejected the form.

Additionally, allegations include:

  • The submission of an invalid form signed by Ahmed Aaly, deputy home minister and the head of the DNR at the time. Aaly has denied any involvement.

  • Photos circulating online showing individuals filling out forms to join the PNC within the Home Ministry premises, with Ihsan allegedly present at the location.

In response, Ihsan has denied any involvement in the submission of invalid forms to the EC.

The Elections Commission has stated that it is conducting further verification of forms submitted for party membership.

The PNC launched a campaign last year aiming to reach a membership of 75,000.
