Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Friday submitted a no-confidence motion against Home Minister Ali Ihsan, accusing him of involvement in fraudulent activities related to adding members to the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).
The decision was taken during the MDP parliamentary group meeting on Wednesday.
The MDP has accused Ihsan of misusing public information from the Department of National Registration (DNR), under the Ministry of Home Affairs, to facilitate the submission of forged and invalid membership forms to the Elections Commission (EC) for inclusion in the PNC.
Other allegations raised include:
-
Favouritism in addressing corruption allegations related to the issuance of quotas for foreign workers.
-
Criminal offences linked to the alleged fraudulent actions.
The petition, signed by 12 MDP members, asserts that Ihsan’s continuation in office could hinder criminal investigations into his actions and disrupt public safety and security in the Maldives.
The MDP cited complaints from individuals who were added to the PNC register without their knowledge, including Hussein Ziyad, MDP MP for Vikaradhoo. The Elections Commission rejected Ziyad’s form upon investigation.
Further allegations and evidence presented by the MDP include:
-
The inclusion of Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Ahmed Aaly’s signature on invalid forms submitted to the EC, which Ahmed Aaly denies.
-
Photographs showing individuals filling out membership forms for the PNC inside the Home Ministry office, with Ihsan present at the site.
Ihsan has denied all allegations and stated that he was not involved in submitting invalid forms to the EC.
The Elections Commission has announced it is conducting additional screening of membership application forms to ensure compliance with regulations.
