Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef on Sunday directed the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to accelerate the investigation of major corruption cases.
In a document published on the Prosecutor General’s Office website, Abbas highlighted delays in criminal investigations by the ACC and shortcomings in recovering state funds lost in significant corruption cases. The directive outlines specific cases to prioritise, including:
-
The leasing of islands and lagoons for tourism development through the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) during former President Abdulla Yameen's administration.
-
Alleged irregularities in the Binveriya and Gedhoruveriya housing and land schemes introduced by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration.
-
Corruption allegations linked to certain transactions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
-
Cases involving public finances and issues related to state-owned companies.
The Prosecutor General’s Office also issued instructions to standardise investigation procedures and ensure consistency in cases handled by various criminal agencies.
“The purpose of the directive is to expedite the investigation of cases handled by the commission, establish systematic procedures, and ensure uniformity in investigations conducted by different criminal agencies,” the statement said.
The directive further aims to streamline the process for the ACC to seek legal advice from the Prosecutor General’s Office from an early stage.
