PNC secures majority in council by-elections

According to the Elections Commission, 6,275 people voted in the by-elections, representing 55.4% of eligible voters.

The ruling Progressive National Congress (PNC) won the majority of seats in the island council and women’s development committee by-elections held across several islands on Saturday.

Two island council by-elections and nine women’s development committee by-elections took place.

In the island council elections:

  • Ibrahim Mohamed, an independent candidate, won the HDh. Makunudhoo council seat.

  • Athifa Moosa, the PNC candidate, won the N. Landhoo council seat.

In the women’s development committee elections, the PNC secured seven out of the nine contested seats:

  • HDh. Hirimaradhoo – Faheema Abdulla (PNC)

  • N. Landhoo – Athifa Moosa (PNC)

  • N. Miladhoo – Aiminath Azuma (MDP)

  • R. Innamaadhoo – Aishath Esa (PNC)

  • B. Goidhoo – Najwa Farooq (PNC)

  • ADh. Hanyameedhoo – Khadeeja Ibrahim (MDP)

  • Dh. Hulhudheli – Fathimath Risala (Independent)

  • L. Gan – Aiminath Afrah (PNC)

  • Th. Buruni – Rugiyya Razeena (PNC)

  • GA. Kanduhulhudhoo – Aiminath Shifana (PNC)
