Two people injured in a fire at an accommodation block for expatriate workers in Dhigurah are receiving treatment on ventilators at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
The fire occurred at about 2:00 am on Friday in an accommodation block where about 30 foreign workers were living.
According to Maldives Police Service, eight people were injured in the incident and five of them died.
One of the injured persons treated at the island health centre has been discharged, while two others were transferred to Malé for treatment.
A media official from IGMH said both patients remain in critical condition.
“Both are being treated on ventilators,” the official said, adding that the hospital’s media department has not yet received details regarding the injuries.
The Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) said it has begun an investigation into the incident. The commission announced the investigation in a post on X.
President of the Dhigurah Island Council, Ibrahim Usman, told Atoll Times that about 30 workers were living in the accommodation block at the time of the fire.
“So far it is believed that the incident may have occurred due to a gas leak while cooking. However, the cause will be known after the police investigation,” Usman said.
Authorities confirmed that the five people who died in the fire were Bangladeshi nationals.
