President nominates Zahid as EC chair; Ahmed Nashid as ACC vice chair

The nominations follow vacancies in the commissions, with appointments made on 26th of last month.

President Mohamed Muizzu has submitted nominations to parliament for the positions of president and vice president of the Elections Commission (EC) and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The nominations follow vacancies in the commissions, with appointments made on 26th of last month. Two positions in the EC became vacant after the parliament passed no-confidence motions against vice presidents Ali Nashath and Mohamed Asif.

The ACC vice president’s position became vacant following the resignation of Abdul Salam and commission member Thoha Mohamed last November, ahead of a scheduled no-confidence vote in parliament.

The president has nominated:

  • Mohamed Zahid as President of the EC

  • Abdul Rahman Solah Rasheed as Vice President of the EC

Both Zahid and Solah were the most recent appointees to the commission.

For the position of ACC Vice President, the president has nominated:

  • Ahmed Nashid

This is the first time the president has had the authority to appoint the chairperson and vice chairperson of these commissions.

Parliament previously approved the appointments of Solah and Zahid as EC members on 16th of last month.

The current members of the EC are:

  • Dr Mohamed Zahir

  • Hassan Zakariyya

  • Abdul Haseeb Ismail

  • Mohamed Zahid

  • Abdul Rahman Solah Rasheed

The current members of the ACC are:

  • Adam Shamil – President

  • Shiyama Mohamed

  • Shazna Hashim

  • Abdulla Nashid

  • Ahmed Nashid
