Former President Mohamed Nasheed on Friday expressed concern over the potential impact of air pollution on tourism in the Maldives.
Since early last month, haze has affected various parts of the country, leading to a significant decline in air quality. Reports indicate that:
-
Over the past six months, visibility has decreased in several areas.
-
In some locations, nearby islands have not been visible due to the haze.
In a post on X, Nasheed noted that air pollution levels are high during the peak tourist season. He stated that if the situation persists, it could negatively impact the tourism sector.
Air pollution has been observed during December and January each year. Experts attribute this to the effects of smoke from India carried by northern monsoon winds. In India, agricultural burning contributes to the production of smoke.
Nasheed stated that air pollution in the Maldives is caused by external factors and emphasised the need for collaborative efforts to address the issue.
