Police are investigating social media posts containing indirect death threats against Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel.
Dr Khaleel arrived in neighbouring Sri Lanka on Tuesday on an official visit. A Sri Lankan national, previously deported from the Maldives, made statements on social media that police have identified as threats against the minister and others.
In a statement, police confirmed that they are aware of the case and that relevant authorities are conducting an investigation.
The individual identified as Nadeesh Perera, who was previously married to a Maldivian citizen, made posts referencing the possibility of incidents such as a car accident or a fire in Colombo that could harm Khaleel. He also urged drivers to exercise caution.
Perera had previously attempted to re-enter Maldives in May last year but was denied entry due to his prior deportation. Following this, he began expressing dissatisfaction on social media.
