The mystery surrounding the death of Zakiyya Moosa, who was found dead in a warehouse in Noonu Atoll Holhudhoo last September, remains unresolved. On Saturday, a large number of people gathered near the Holhudhoo police station in a protest demanding justice and a fair investigation into the case.

The police have not yet identified any suspects or foul play in Zakiyya’s death. Authorities maintain that there is no evidence suggesting anyone else was involved, implying that she took her own life.

However, many residents of Holhudhoo strongly disagree. They argue that it is highly unlikely Zakiyya could have stabbed herself in the neck multiple times, raising suspicions of external involvement.

The frustration over the case has led to multiple demonstrations. A large protest was previously held in Holhudhoo, and Saturday marked the second such mass gathering.

The Protest:

  • A crowd gathered near the police station.

  • Protesters demanded a fair and thorough investigation.

  • Calls were made for the immediate arrest of any suspects involved.

All protesters wore black, symbolising mourning and unity. They carried boards with slogans and wore cloth bands on their foreheads as a sign of their determination.

As the protest intensified, additional police forces arrived on the island via launch. Clashes ensued when officers fired pepper spray at the crowd. Videos circulating on social media show elderly individuals struggling due to the effects of the spray, further escalating public anger.

Despite police efforts to control the situation, the demonstrators remained steadfast outside the station, continuing to chant slogans demanding justice for Zakiyya.

Authorities have repeatedly stated that there is no indication of foul play in Zakiyya’s death. The following findings have been presented:

  • Zakiyya’s body was transported to Male for examination by a pathologist.

  • The medical expert found no external injuries inflicted by another person.

  • Hesitation marks and deep stab wounds were found on both sides of her neck.

  • Three deep wounds were located on the left side, while two were on the right.

  • A mark on her chest was observed but was determined not to be caused by another person.

  • No signs of another individual’s presence were found at the scene.

Despite these findings, the case remains a subject of intense debate. Many islanders believe Zakiyya did not take her own life and that someone else is responsible for her death. They continue to call for a more in-depth investigation, urging authorities to uncover the full truth.
