Parliament committee approves Fazeen’s removal from Broadcom
The committee subsequently agreed to allow Fazeen another opportunity to respond to the allegations.
The Independent Institutions Committee of Parliament (IIP) has approved the impeachment of Mohamed Fazeen, Vice-President of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom), over allegations of sexual assault against a female employee.
The committee has been investigating the case since January. In a meeting held Wednesday night, which lasted just eight minutes, members discussed the matter without publicly disclosing details. However, sources within the committee confirmed to Atoll Times that the case involved allegations against Fazeen.
During the meeting, the committee’s vice-chairman and Kela PNC member, Abdullah Shareef, proposed the motion to send the matter to the Parliament floor. Henveyru West PNC Member, Ali Ibrahim, seconded the motion, and the committee’s chairman, Hura constituency PNC member, Hussain Riza Adam, confirmed its unanimous approval.
“The party requests an additional opportunity [to respond] to the motion,” Riza stated, without specifying further details.
The committee subsequently agreed to allow Fazeen another opportunity to respond to the allegations.
Under parliamentary procedure, members of independent institutions can only be removed from office after the committee formally approves the motion and sends it to parliament for a final decision. The case has now been referred back to the committee for further consideration.
