An emergency motion submitted to parliament regarding ongoing power outages in the connected islands of Addu has been rejected.

The outages have continued for several days despite efforts to address the issue.

The power disruptions have been attributed to the failure of gensets supplying electricity to the connected islands. A new genset was delivered last month to address the issue, but intermittent outages have persisted. The emergency motion was dismissed on Monday, with 47 members of the ruling PNC-led Parliament, which holds a supermajority, voting against it. Thirteen members voted in favour.

The motion was submitted by opposition MDP parliamentary group leader and Hithadhoo South MP Ibrahim Nazil. It called on the government to fulfil its legal responsibility to improve the electricity situation in Addu.

The motion outlined the following concerns:

  • The government has not taken adequate measures to provide reliable electricity services.

  • The President had pledged to resolve the electricity issue before the start of Ramadan.

  • The ongoing outages have affected the basic living conditions of residents during Ramadan.

  • The government has not ensured a consistent supply of electricity.

  • Public services, including island offices and shops, have been disrupted due to power outages.

  • The public remains concerned about unannounced power disruptions.
