Former Makundhoo MP Mohamed Rai and former Managing Director of the Road Development Corporation (RDC) Moosa Ali Manik have been ordered to appear before the police for allegedly violating the Peaceful Assembly Act during ongoing protests against the government.

The protests, organised by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), are being held in response to recent constitutional amendments that allow a member of parliament to lose their seat within a day if expelled from their party. Since Friday, the MDP has been staging nightly protests after 10 pm.

According to the police summons, Rai and Moosa Ali Manik are required to provide statements regarding their participation in Sunday’s protest. The police have cited violations including gathering in different areas of Male in breach of the Freedom of Assembly Act, disrupting public transport and businesses, and obstructing police duties.

Both individuals have been instructed to appear before the police at 1 pm Wednesday.

In recent days, the police have used force to disperse the protests, which have been stopped at a certain point each night. The MDP has accused the police of excessive force. Several individuals were taken into custody during Sunday’s demonstration, though they have since been released.
