First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has condemned the attack on opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) activist Mariyam Zubair, who was targeted by two masked individuals Sunday night.
Mariyam Zubair and another MDP activist were sprayed with tarred oil by two individuals on a motorcycle as they were leaving the MDP headquarters on Chandhanee Magu after a protest. Mariyam Zubair stated that the attack was carried out by specific individuals and came at a time when legal proceedings involving the President and First Lady were ongoing.
Following the incident, Mariyam Zubair reported the attack to the police and spoke to the media.
In a post on ‘X’ Monday, the first lady condemned the attack and stated that such incidents and insults are unacceptable. She urged all parties to avoid actions that could escalate tensions and to allow due process to continue fairly.
The attack on Mariyam Zubair occurred after she commented on vaping restrictions in the Maldives in connection with the president’s son.
