
Govt reinstates Aasandha with private health insurance

The policy requiring private insurance to be exhausted before using the national Aasandha health insurance scheme has been reversed, making Aasandha available alongside private insurance coverage once again.
The initial decision, implemented in November last year, prioritised private insurance for billing before Aasandha could be utilised. Aasandha stated at the time that the change was made to ensure the sustainability and quality of services.
However, the agency has not provided a reason for reversing the decision five months later.
ADK Hospital Managing Director Ahmed Afal confirmed the change, stating that the adjustment currently applies only to consultations. Further modifications are being considered to allow combined coverage for additional services.
Previous System:

Aasandha was used first, even if a patient had private insurance.

Private insurance covered any remaining costs not paid by Aasandha.
November 2024 policy change:

Private insurance was prioritised for billing at government and private healthcare facilities.

Patients had to cover any costs exceeding their private insurance coverage out of pocket.

New policy:

Aasandha will now cover the portion of costs not covered by private insurance.

For example, if a private insurance plan covers MVR 300 of a MVR 500 consultation fee, Aasandha will cover the remaining MVR 200.
Aasandha has not yet commented on the decision to revise the policy.
